-Sam was from the Islands, he was born about 1833. Sam made a basket
that he bought over with him, it remains in the family today.
-Sam once belonged to John C. Johnson of Greene Alabama.
-Upon the death of John C. Johnson in 1856 Sam was willed to Elizabeth
Adeline Johnson Price and husband Cuthbert Lewis Price (C. L. Price)
of Anderson County, Texas.
-Sam was placed on the ship Atlantic with two others a boy named Rufus
age 10 and his 14 year-old niece named Arlene on December 31, 1856
bound for Texas. The ship's Captain's name was Smith, they sailed from
Mississippi to the Port of New Orleans then to Galveston, Texas on their
way to C. L. Price and Price's Mountain Plantation in Palestine, Texas.
-Mary Foster, the daughter of a slave master purchased Sam's freedom.
-According to records Sam and Mary were married in 1859.
-Together they had three sons that survived into adulthood, Carter Price,
H.L. Price and Ben Price. Daughter Clarinda Price, died as child.
-Sam was also the father of Tony Price and Sarah 'Sallie' Price.
-Tony Price married Addie Brown their children were Sarah Price, Ella Price, Maggie
William Price, Lottie Mae Price,Thomas 'T.C.' Price, Sam Price, Sammie Lee Price,
Albert 'A.C.' Price, William M. Price, J.D. Price, Anna Bell Price, Addie Price, Elizabeth
Price and Tony Price Jr.
-Carter Price married Eliza McNeal their children were Queen Esther Loubertha Price
and Carter Lewis Price Jr.
-Sarah Price married Austin Micheaux their children were Young Charles Micheaux,
Elsie Vera Micheaux and Willie C. Micheaux.
-H.L. Price married Rosanna Swanson their children were Henry Lee Price, Lela M.
Price, Wright Cuney Price, Mattie Price, Gladys Price, Ira Z. Price, Jewell Swanson
Price and Joseph F. Price.
-Ben Price married Azilea Dora Johnson their children were Fad Francis Price, Nellie
Bell Price, Lemeul Lee 'Chook' Price, Virgie Mae Price, James Avell Price, William
Elise Price, Benjamin Price Jr., Inez Price, Bennie Benita Price, Elizabeth Price,
Booker T. Price, Ivery Lee 'Dib' Price, Henry Lee Price and Warren G. Price.
-In the early 1870's Sam Price owned 4000 acres of land including 557 acres that was
granted to William A. Brimberry by the Governor of Texas, Edmond J. Davis (E.J. Davis).
-Since Sam wanted a place that former slaves could have a decent burial we now have
Price Cemetery. It is located up on a hill three miles northeast of Palestine,
Texas on the east side of Highway 155 and dates back to the early days of Texas
statehood.
An oak tree that was planted by Sam stood on the land until 2016 when it was cut
down to a stump due to an infection. The stump has since been removed and the
family plan to plant another tree there.
-The farm land once owned by Sam remains in the family.
